~ Adrian Teh, General Manager of Hilton Kuching ~

Can you briefly introduce yourself? What inspired your decision to return to Malaysia and take up the current role as the General Manager of Hilton Kuching?

My name is Adrian, and I serve as the General Manager of Hilton Kuching. My decision to return to my roots was deeply influenced by my heritage. Originally born in Penang, Malaysia, I spent a significant portion of my career working in Australasia. The desire to explore Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, prompted my return.

Southeast Asia is a rapidly growing destination and region for Hilton, and being a part of its expansion in this dynamic region is truly exciting. On a personal note, the move also holds significance for my young family. I am keen on ensuring that my daughter stays connected with her heritage, making the relocation to Malaysia a meaningful choice for us.

What unique features set Hilton Kuching apart from competitors in the local or international market?

Hilton Kuching, an iconic presence in the heart of Kuching for the past 35 years, boasts a distinctive legacy in the city. Our prime location offers guests breathtaking views of the Sarawak River from rooms, public spaces, and meeting rooms — a unique feature that defines the Hilton Kuching experience.

Convenience is key, with the airport just a 10 to 15-minute drive away. Proximity to essential amenities, attractions, and the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching enhances accessibility.

Above all, we believe our people make the real difference. Focused on delivering elevated service, our inclusive and diverse team is dedicated to providing a level of hospitality that sets us apart from competitors, both domestically and internationally.

In what ways would you leverage the upgraded room features and meeting facilities to enhance guest satisfaction and differentiate Hilton Kuching from others?

Our room facilities have undergone a complete remodel, offering a fresh and modern product for our guests. The redesigned rooms prioritise comfort, featuring 55-inch LED TVs for a delightful entertainment experience.

For meetings, our level one meeting rooms boast panoramic views, a unique selling point enhanced by our strategic location.

Embracing ESG initiatives, we have reduced energy costs through LED lighting, minimised food waste, and committed to supporting sustainable seafood, including cage-free eggs across all hotel levels.

Our meeting rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, featuring LED TVs that accommodate Zoom, Teams calls, video conferencing, and touchscreen capabilities—ensuring seamless connectivity for both in-person and virtual interactions.

Could you briefly share the unique features of Hilton Kuching’s customisable meeting packages, emphasising the seamless blend of business and leisure?

One aspect we take great pride in is our commitment to flexibility for our clients. Our experienced sales team, with years of service, has cultivated lasting relationships that our customers value.

Our Ballroom stands out for its versatility, offering various options to cater to our clients’ preferences. Recently, we have installed LED screens in the main ballroom and across different rooms, ensuring flexibility and meeting diverse client requirements.

Recognising the trend of blending business and leisure in the post-pandemic, we have upgraded our gym facilities and have plans to upgrade our pool and landscaping areas. This investment aims to provide families the opportunity to seamlessly combine business and leisure seamlessly, especially given our strategic location at Hilton Kuching, which offers easy access to local attractions.

With over 26 years of experience in the hospitality industry, how do you identify talent, foster professional growth, and ensure that the team is well-equipped to provide exceptional service?

Our team is our most valuable asset at this hotel, and their role is crucial to our business success. At Hilton, we offer a variety of development programmes and courses to help our team members grow and advance in their careers.

Cultivating a healthy and robust culture is a key aspect of success in any hotel. I believe our team here is highly engaged — a young and dynamic group that is eager to learn and develop. When it comes to talent, fostering open conversations is essential. Team members are encouraged to discuss their career aspirations openly with their immediate managers, the HR team, and myself. This approach helps us identify and nurture talent within our team.

Recognising the ambition of the younger generation to progress swiftly, we strive to accommodate their growth aspirations. Hilton’s recent recognition as the number one best place to work globally reflects our commitment to fostering a positive culture not only in this hotel but throughout the entire company.

What role does Hilton Kuching envision playing in the Business Events (MICE) and leisure sectors, and are there further key developments or expansion plans in the pipeline?

We are a pivotal hotel in Kuching, having been an integral part of the city for the past 35 years. Our close collaboration with Business Events Sarawak and the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching is a testament to our commitment to supporting events in Kuching.

Looking forward to 2024, we anticipate a strong and dynamic year ahead. Our optimism is based on positive business trends, and the forward bookings we have secured reinforce our belief that 2024 will be a highly successful year for us.
