The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and its Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Business Events Alliance (KLCCBEA) hotelpartners recently came together to sponsor and host the Malaysia IT Challenge (MITC) for Youth with Disabilities 2019, providing both complimentary event space and accommodation for the participants. The Secretary-General of Ministry of Education Malaysia, YBhg Dato’ Dr. Mohd Gazali Abas, officially closed the successful two-day event, which saw the participation of over 60 special needs students from all over Malaysia.

Being held in Kuala Lumpur for the first time, 64 special needs students, aged between 13 to 18, with hearing impairments, learning disabilities, visual impairments and physical disabilities, competed in MITC. In the end, four students from various schools in Kuala Lumpur emerged as winners and will now be representing Malaysia at the Global IT Challenge in Seoul, South Korea later this year.

The Centre’s General Manager, Alan Pryor, shared “We are delighted to sponsor the venue for MITC 2019 and offer our support to this important initiative focused on the nation’s digital agenda and special needs education.  As the ‘People’s Centre’ and Malaysia’s premier purpose-built venue, we are a socially responsible organisation that aims to give back to Malaysia and the community within which we are based. As such, sponsoring this significant event fit perfectly under the education pillar of our Community Engagement programme, which aims to support projects that advance education development in the country.”

Our world-class universal accessibility features also allows us to host meaningful events like this, where communities come together to collaborate, engage and exchange ideas that result in knowledge transfer that elevates Malaysia’s nation building initiatives

In addition, the Centre facilitated the involvement of its KLCCBEA hotelpartners, the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur and Impiana KLCC Hotel, who assisted in ensuring a successful and memorable MITC through their sponsorship of accommodation for participants.

The Alliance showcases the importance of accessibility and connectivity of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) precinct and aims to enhance and optimise the visitor experience through collaboration with precinct partners.

“We commend the efforts of the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Education Department and the teachers in supporting and organising the event. We would also like to extend a big congratulations to all the students and teachers from around Malaysia who participated in the challenge and made the event such a great experience,” concluded Pryor.

Thanking the Centre for their sponsorship of MITC,Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Education Department Director, Maznah Abu Bakar, Organiser of MITC, said “This event would not have been a success without the generous support the Centre provided us throughout. We deeply appreciate the sponsorship, which greatly helped us deliver such a memorable event for the students and teachers. It was wonderful to see the students being given the opportunity to showcase their talents and highlight to Malaysia and the world that special needs students can be meaningful contributors to the workforce in the future.”

Maznah continued, “In order for this to happen, MITC is a crucial step for us to create opportunities for these students as it provides a platform for them to acquire the right knowledge, skills and attitude that will help them remain relevant in the 21stcentury workplace, especially as the country progresses through the industrial revolution 4.0. Congratulations to the winners who will be representing Malaysia at the Global IT Challenge 2019. We wish you the best of luck and know you will do Malaysia proud.”

This is the fourth edition of MITC.The challenge encompassed four categories that the students were judged on including eCreative, eLifeMap, eTools and Learning Content. Two challenges were individual and two were team-based activities. Each team consisted of four participants and must have one visually impaired, one hearing impaired, one learning disability and one physical disability participants.
