Tourism marketing is undergoing a profound transformation. Around the world, destinations are increasingly moving away from traditional advertising campaigns and embracing immersive storytelling, cultural experiences and user-generated content to capture the attention of modern travellers.
Selangor has emerged as one of the latest examples of this evolution.
Following the remarkable success of FOLK SONG GALA: Selangor Edition, which recently surpassed an extraordinary 240 million views, Tourism Selangor officially unveiled the Surprising Selangor TikTok Dance BGM Challenge, marking the next phase of an ambitious initiative that combines tourism, entertainment, culture and technology into a unified promotional strategy.

The campaign, organised by Tourism Selangor together with IOI Properties Group and JAN Media Marketing Sdn Bhd, illustrates how destinations can harness the power of digital platforms to engage audiences across geographical boundaries while simultaneously strengthening cultural ties and encouraging tourism growth.
At the centre of this initiative lies FOLK SONG GALA: Selangor Edition, jointly produced by Tourism Selangor and Guangxi Radio and Television (GXRT). As the first international edition of the programme, the production introduced viewers to Selangor’s vibrant multicultural landscape, weaving together elements of music, heritage, gastronomy, local traditions and iconic attractions into a compelling narrative that resonated strongly with audiences throughout China and beyond.
Surpassing 240 million views is undoubtedly an impressive achievement. Yet the true significance of the programme extends well beyond its numbers. More importantly, it demonstrates the increasing importance of cultural diplomacy and digital engagement in shaping travellers’ perceptions and influencing future visitation patterns.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, Selangor State Executive Councillor for Local Government and Tourism, YB Dato’ Ng Suee Lim, emphasised that strategic partnerships remain essential in unlocking new opportunities for tourism promotion. He expressed appreciation to Tourism Selangor, Guangxi Broadcasting Television, IOI Properties Group and JAN Media Marketing for their collaborative efforts, describing the initiative as a testament to the power of partnerships in creating new dimensions of tourism promotion.
The state government, he noted, remains firmly committed to strengthening tourism as one of Selangor’s key economic growth drivers. However, he also acknowledged that the rapid evolution of digital lifestyles has fundamentally changed the way destinations communicate with travellers.
“Tourism promotion strategies must continue evolving so that they remain creative, interactive and relevant to contemporary audiences,” he said.
One of the initiative’s most compelling features is its emphasis on cultural exchange.

Drawing inspiration from both Malaysian and Chinese traditions, the campaign creatively blends the beloved Malaysian folk song Ikan Kekek with the classic Chinese composition Wan Shui Qian Shan Zong Shi Qing (萬水千山總是情), performed by artists Layla Sania and Wu Keyue. Beyond its artistic value, the collaboration has become a symbol of the enduring friendship and growing tourism relationship between Malaysia and China.
The launch also coincided with the signing of a memorandum of collaboration between Tourism Selangor and IOI Hospitality Sdn Bhd, a move expected to strengthen future tourism campaigns and create new opportunities for integrated destination promotion. The partnership underscores the increasingly important role played by the private sector in shaping modern tourism ecosystems.
Equally significant is the campaign’s focus on empowering ordinary travellers to become content creators

Through the newly introduced TikTok challenge, Tourism Selangor hopes to encourage greater participation among young people, influencers, digital creators and local communities. Rather than relying exclusively on conventional marketing channels, the state aims to harness social media as an avenue for authentic storytelling, enabling participants to share their personal experiences through music, dance and short-form video content.
According to YB Dato’ Ng, this approach is expected to broaden the international visibility of Selangor’s attractions while generating greater economic activity for tourism businesses and surrounding communities. Increased visitor footfall, stronger destination awareness and enhanced international exposure are among the anticipated benefits.
This represents an important lesson not only for destination marketing organisations but also for the broader business events industry.
For years, destinations have depended largely upon promotional campaigns, exhibitions and trade missions to communicate their value propositions to prospective visitors. Today, however, influence increasingly stems from authentic experiences, emotional connections and compelling narratives shared organically across digital platforms.

Selangor’s latest initiative offers a glimpse into this future.
The success of FOLK SONG GALA: Selangor Edition demonstrates that a well-crafted story has the power to transcend borders, languages and cultures. More importantly, it illustrates how governments, businesses, cultural institutions, artists and technology platforms can work collectively to create an ecosystem that inspires people not merely to observe a destination, but to experience it for themselves.
As the race for international attention intensifies, the future of tourism promotion may well belong to destinations capable of turning visitors into storytellers and cultural experiences into global conversations.
With more than 240 million views already achieved, Selangor appears determined to lead that conversation.
