Melaka is historically significant with place in history as the birthplace of Malaysia began. In the 16th century, Melaka was the epicentre of an important trading empire which attracted thousands of traders from all over the world as far as Arabia, China, India and Europe, to conduct trade in silk, spices, gold and porcelain. 2019 is the year to visit Melaka. Visit Melaka Year 2019 (VMY 2019) is set to make historical Melaka the top-of-the-mind tourist destination, encouraging tourists to stay longer in order to enjoy the festival offerings as well as it historical and man-made attractions. Themed “The Gateway to Historic Malaysia”, the year-long calendar is packed with festivities and activities of every genre; for instance cultural festivals, shopping extravaganza, international acclaimed events, eco-tourism events, arts, music showcases, food promotion and other themed events. The official logo of VMY 2019 is a colourful portrayal of typical traditional Melaka wooden house adorned with colourful antique Nyonya tiles staircase.
Filled with harmonious blend of different cultures communities, Melaka is a melting pot of all races including Malay, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, Baba-Nyonya, Chitty and others. Hence, the VMY 2019 campaign seeks to showcase and celebrate Melaka’s bountiful and diverse cultures and festivities as a tourist attraction. The state also offers a range of tourism products and attractions with focus on 13 sub-sectors, namely history, culture, recreation, sports, shopping, convention, health, education, food, agro-tourism, eco-tourism, Melaka My Second Home and youth. With its slogan “Visit Historic Melaka Means Visit Malaysia” and “Melaka World Heritage City UNESCO”, Melaka has definitely a lot to offer to tourists and is a great mix for a holiday.
In conjunction with the VMY 2019, the state government through the hotel industry has introduced a variety of attractive accommodation packages in efforts to increase tourist attendance and extended stay. The implementation of VMY 2019 was the state government’s main mission in supporting the implementation of the Visit Malaysia Year 2020. It also served as the main platform for Melaka to promote the historical state internationally as well as realising its target of attracting 20 million tourists with an estimated tourist receipts of RM24 billion this year.
VMY 2019 campaign also leverages on smart partnerships that nurtures stakeholder engagement, support and participation. The symbiosis enables Melaka’s tourism efforts to be competitive and to remain one of the prime contributors to the socio-economic development of the nation’s second smallest state, making it part of a state’s mission. It is envisaged that government agencies, the private sector, non-government agencies and industry players will come together and make the VMY 2019 campaign a success.
